Frances studied English and Philosophy at university and went on to be a secondary English teacher. In the early years of her career, she also taught philosophy as part of general studies. Mid-career she gained a distinction in her Master’s Degree in Children’s Literature, writing a dissertation on feminine heroes. As well as being a classroom teacher, she has been a Head of English, a local authority adviser and a writer and series editor for Oxford University Press. She encountered Philosophy for Children when leading the Gifted and Talented team in West Berkshire and quickly developed a commitment to its pedagogy. During and following training as a SAPERE trainer, she gained extensive classroom experience of P4C, working at both primary and secondary levels. She has also provided numerous workshops at teacher conferences and delivered both Open and Closed Level 1 P4C training courses. Her secondary teaching career ended in July 2015 after a final five years of teaching English at The Downs School, Compton in West Berkshire, where she was also promoting P4C. Currently, she is focusing exclusively on developing her role as a SAPERE trainer.
