Trainer Profile:

Emma first encountered Philosophy for Children in 2004 when working at Alverstoke Junior School in Gosport, Hampshire, and has continued to practice P4C ever since; she feels passionately about its value in schools, the local community and with her own young children.

Emma is working with a number of schools as a Level 1 SAPERE trainer, including a school involved in the current EEF project.  She leads Level 1 training and provides support with planning opportunities in the curriculum for P4C and co-facilitates enquiries in order to develop teachers’ confidence and skills in P4C.

Emma qualified as a Primary Teacher in 1999 and has worked in a number of schools in Hampshire, both Primary and Junior, and was a Deputy Headteacher at two junior schools and a leading teacher for Gifted and Talented provision in the county.  She introduced P4C to Lee-on-the Solent Junior School as part of her Deputy role in 2011; whole school Level 1 training was implemented and P4C was led by Emma to develop the school values and a concept led curriculum, culminating in the school receiving the Bronze P4C Award. Since leaving her Deputy Head role in 2014, Emma now works independently but continued to support Lee-on-the-Solent Junior, working with the P4C Leaders and leading staff training; the school is now a Silver P4C Award school.

Since working independently, Emma has continued to facilitate P4C enquiries with children and worked with a Year 2/3 group at a school in Gosport as part of a transition project.  She also ran her own ThinkOn after school club with children in Years 3-6 as she values working with children and developing her own facilitation skills.  Between 2012 and 2014 Emma led a community P4C group in a local pub with the community ranging in age from 20-70 years old, which resulted in her writing an article for the SAPERE Newsletter.  She continues to be interested in the place that P4C has in the community and would like to organise and facilitate a community of enquiry which has both children and retired people in residential care as its members.

Specialist areas: incorporating P4C into a concept led curriculum; she developed the idea of the Concept Light Bulbs when working with her own Year 6 class as a way of children becoming more familiar with concepts to form philosophical questions and to think conceptually across their whole learning experience.
