Mathematics and Philosophy for Children (P4C): Developing Deep Learning Through Collaborative Enquiry

A one-day workshop at Resource for London
Thursday 20 June
£150 including lunch and refreshments
Suitable for primary and secondary educators

There are many ways in which the skills of dialogue and collaborative learning developed in P4C can be applied to learning in mathematics. In this one-day workshop, SAPERE trainer Rod Cunningham will provide a range of mathematical starting points from across the age range, primary and secondary, which invoke creative, collaborative, critical and caring thinking and also lend themselves to exploration of ‘big’ mathematics ideas. Participants will gain insight into the learning opportunities that P4C presents and will be able to apply models of 4Cs thinking to their particular mathematics curriculum.

Rod has blogged about the course, and about the benefits of using P4C in maths, here.

Aims for the course

  • To raise awareness of the potential contribution of Communities of Philosophical Enquiry and philosophical moves in general to the learning and teaching of mathematics
  • To provide practical examples of good strategies for teaching mathematics based on dialogue, concept attainment and 4Cs thinking
  • To provide links to available resources for further development of the above

The course is suitable for both primary and secondary school teachers. Examples from across the age range will be used.
