Secondary schools wanted to take part in our new project, Thinking Together in Science and RE
Would you like to engage young people in philosophical thinking within your Science and RE lessons?
We are looking for six UK secondary schools to take part in an exciting new project, Thinking Together in Science and RE, funded by the Templeton World Charity Foundation as part of the Big Questions in Classroom project.
The project will support students and teachers from both Science and Religious Education departments to use the powerful pedagogy of Philosophy for Children, or P4C, to explore the philosophical dimensions of RE and science.
The project focuses on Years 9 and 10.
Aims of the project
The project aims to develop philosophical teachers as well as philosophical learners. Both students and teachers will develop skills and techniques for philosophical thinking, reasoning and reflection and will enhance their capacities for intellectual curiosity and wonder.
Students will be taught to generate and examine big questions within each subject, and to enquire into the deep connections between the concepts that underpin these subjects.
An extended programme of regular practice in P4C will enable the students to initiate and enjoy intellectually challenging conversations, to ‘think like’ theologians and scientists, and to form an ever-deepening understanding of reality.
By engaging young people in thinking deeply and reasoning about the concepts that underpin science and religious education through philosophical questions, we can enhance and support their knowledge and understanding of the curriculum as well as the world around them.
What support is on offer?
Science and RE teachers in Years 9 and 10 will be trained in philosophical facilitation using SAPERE P4C's established, quality-assured training programme.
Your school will take part in:
- a programme of staff training, starting with our online Level 1 Foundation course and progressing through Level 2A to our Level 2B P4C leadership training
- a CPD offer which includes twilight sessions, support days, network meetings and webinars
over the three years of the project.
What will it cost?
Project schools will be expected to contribute £500 per year over the three years of the project. In return, schools will receive a programme of training, professional support and resources to the value of at least £10,830.
What is the timescale?
This is a three-year project, starting in Autumn Term 2021 and running to Summer Term 2024.
